Love Birds

LOVE BIRDS

A 6" double chocolate and raspberry drenched mud cake with a chocolate ganache and decorated with two litttle white and red love birds sitting on a red heart. Completed with a red and white spotted ribbon.
A lovely little cake to make, super cute on its own or as a top tier of a non-tradditional wedding cake.

Ladybird Cutie Pie

Lady Bird Cake

I was asked to make a 7" lady bird cake for a 2nd birthday for one of my daughter's friends.I decided on a cute wee ladybird with big eyes, fluttery eye lashes and curly antennae sitting in a garden with white and yellow daisies. It was a buttermilk sponge with a raspberry and vanilla buttercream filing. It was a hit at the birthday party. Luckily the good thing about the sugarpaste is its really easy to take the icing off the cake or lots of cake and red icing combined with jelly would have had a room of 2 year olds bouncing off the walls!

Shoes and Roses

Shoes and Roses

I was asked to make a small 7 inch cake for a birthday.  I decided on a shoe cake with a sugarpaste rose. Iwanted the shoe to be classic and beautiful so I went with a simple black peeptoe with a small pink heart on the instep to tie in with the pink rose. The shoe needed to be made well in advance to enable it to dry so it could support the shape, luckily I made more than one as I had a few disasters putting it together, in fact the final shoe was glued togther at the last minute when the heel snapped!

I used pale pink flower paste to make a wired small pink rose to sit by the shoe. The writing was in french as the recipient of the cake was french and it was to be given to her during a french class she was teaching.

The cake was a buttermilk sponge with a raspberry filing and vanilla buttercream.

Christening Cake

Christening Cake For Izzy

I was asked to help resurrect a top tier of a wedding cake that had been saved for 3 years to be used as a christening cake. First thing I will say is always take off any sugar paste icing if your going to save a cake! The icing had all almost melted underneath and made the top part of the cake turn to mush. I thought it would be nice a quick to take it all off and re-ice the fruit cake but it took me about 4 hours! We got their in the end and recoated the cake in marzipan and crisp white icing. I then decorated it with floral lace cutouts for a bit of side detail and  navy blue writing and some white and blue flowers. The navy and white colour scheme  matched Izzy's post christening dress perfectly.

Alpha Romeo Classic Car

BEEP BEEP

I had a request for a cake version of a favourite classic Alpha. I find it very difficult to make a cake to resemble something that the recipient is so passionate about as I always find it creates extra pressure to make the small details correct. I had photos and a mini model to work with but it was very tricky to get the body the right shape, in fact it wasn't quite right and I really hate it when it's not quite right, but no one seemed to notice in the finished product. The colour was the other issue and involved 2 trips out for more icing to mix.

The cake was a white and dark chocolate marbled mud cake with a raspberry liqueur wash and a raspberry conserve with chocolate buttercream icing for a filling.

The cake had quite a trek to the birthday boy, it survived a train ride, and even a trip on a London duck tour! It was delicious and a huge success.

Camera Cake

I got a commission for a Nikon Camera Cake for a 60th birthday. The exact model was unknown so I modelled it on an old Nikon we had at home. The cake was a white and dark chocolate mud cake with raspberry liqueur syrup wash and chocolate buttercream icing. The only problem I had was the writing on the buttons and camera as the sugarpaste was black and my piping skills are not that great. In the end I went for a more stylised camera without the finer details, I decided as long as it was recognisable as a Nikon camera I was happy.

I made the birdie out of chocolate truffle which was made with the left over chocolate icing and cake all smushed together... delicious!
